Subsequently, he moved through the widest possible spectrum of theatre, working in films, drama, musicals, variety, cabaret and strip shows. And it was the versatility and richness of these experiences that he brought to his own company, first formed in 1962. Over the years Lindsay Kemp has devised an intricate and unique form of theatre which is motivated by emotion. His work is sculptural and he uses movement to emphasize, ultimately, the beauty of stillness, utilizing the musical note to stress the silence which surrounds it. With his Company the basis of which has aways been the development of techninque through training and a sharing of lifestyle and influences he has mounted productions rooted in dance, theatre and mime: Woyzeck, The maids, Legends, Flowers and most recently, Salomé. The Company has, also, made several films in conjunction with Celestino Coronado, including Lindsay Kemp circus, la chambre des anges, miroirs and, looking to the future, a film version of flowers is planned. As well as sustaining a Company, Lindsay Kemp has continued to pursue his mult-faceted career as an actor, dancer, teacher, choreographer, painter, designer and director. He has appeared in a number of films by Ricardo Fellini and John Casavetes as well as Ken Russell’s Savage Messiah, Valentino (currently in production). The Wicker man and Sebastiane (at present on release). Following the success of his ballet The parade’s gone by for Ballet Rambert he has been asked to choreograph another work for the Rambert Company. In addition, the Nederlands Dance Theatre have commissioned a new work by him. Lindsay Kemp produced the Ziggy stardust shows for David Bowie who first appeared as a performer with Lindsay Kemp’s Company in Clowns and Pierrot in Turquoise. In complete contrast to this world of ’pop’, Lindsay Kemp has directed opera at the Academia Filamosica in Rome. He has, also, collaborated on several productions at the Oxford Playhouse, directed plays in Iceland and appeared in drama productions in London’s West End. His work, and that of members of the Company, is well-known at the Festivals of Rome, Zurich, Dublin, Berlin, and Spolito. Mick dagger once sent Linsay Kemp 500 lilies in recognition of his art; Sir Alec Guinness publicly announced him a genius and Sir John Gielgud, Rudofl Nureyev, John Cage, Andy Warhol and Dame Marie Rambert are among those luminaries who have recognised the diverse and extraordinary qualities of Lindsay Kemp and his unique form of theatre.
