BRUNO SCHULZ Bruno Schulz was born in 1892, in Drohobycz (Galicia) and lived for the rest of his life in his native town, where he was a teacher of Art. He was later confined to the ghetto there, and on 19 November 1942, he was killed, shot in the neck by an SS soldier. Although originally concerned with paintings, engravings and drawings, it was through his literary work that Schulz achieved recognition during his lifetime. In 1938, the Polish Academy of Literature awarded him the Laurler d'Or for two collections of narrative monologues, The cinnamon shops { 1934) and The Undertakers' Sanatorium (1937). Apart from these two volumes, all that remains today is but a part of the work (correspondence and critical essays as well as works of fiction) of this prolific author, considered to be one of the major writers of the 20th century. Many of his writings were dispersed, lost or destroyed in the turmoil of the Second World War.
