In point of fact it is impossible to find an all-embracing title unless or Chekhov, This year is the hundredth T anniversary of Chekhov's death. It is an important date but there are not ail that many good | productions of Chekhov anywhere in the ' ' world that would deserve to mark the 38th BITEF. If BITEF were to be dedicated solely to Chekhov, some other and much more important works would have to be omitted. Had it I|| been possible to find at least three or four outstanding Chekhov-based productions that could have been shown in September along- ZjJ side several other significant productions, then the subheading of the 38th BITEF might have been Chekhov... and other passions. As I was considering this year's programme, I realised that that other part -... and other pas- I sions - could indeed be a fitting subheading. I And, as is one wont to do, i started turning I this idea in my head this way and that and concluded that the whole programme of the 38th BITEF, the principal theatre festival and the subsidiary programmes, could revolve round ... and other passions. Thus we shall have the following subheadings this year; for the principal programme; New Theatrical Trends ... and Other Passions ; for BITEF on Film; Chekhov... and Other Passions: for the symposium: X... and Other Passions: for the workshop: Set Design... and Other Passions , and for Polyphony: New Indulgences... and Other Passions. Why... and other passions? The reason is simple: creative passion is needed for every one of these areas of art. There is however always room for some other passions, which go beyond that one passion. The phrase... and other passions reflects a certain uncertainty suited ire of every art, and that includes the art of theatre. Doesn't science also know of the "uncertainty principle"? Jovan Ćirilov

Cette annee est celle du centenaire de la mort de Tchekhov. Et pourtant quoique jubilaire eile n'efait pas marquee par tant de bonnes representations des drames de Tchekhov qui meriteraient de marquer le BITEF de cette annee. Et si le BITEF etait dedie tout entier ä Tchekhov. certains autres spectacles bien plus importants en seraient absents. S'il etait possible de trouver au moins trois ou quatre spectacles exceptionneis sur le theme de Tchekhov qui pourraient y figurer en septemite, alors le soustitre aurait pu etre

Reflechissant sur les spectacles de cette annee je suis arrive äla conclusiwi que cette seconde partie... et autres pssions serait en tout cas un element convenant au.soustitre annee. Comme cela arrive habitueiiement. je me suis mis ä varier J'idee et jai conclu que le programme tout entier du 38° BItEF, aussi bien le programme theatra! principal que ceux d'accompagnement, peuvent s'inscrire dans les variations sur le theme ... et autres passions Ainsi nous aurons cette annee les soustitres suivants - du programme principal - Nouvelles tendances theätrales... et autres passions: pour le BITEF au cinema - Tchekhov... et autres passions: pour le symposium - X ... et autres passions: le seminaire - Design de scene... et autres passions, et pour la Polifonie Dispositions... et autres passions. Pourquoi... et autres passions? La raison en est tres simple: chacun de ces domaines de I'art exige de la passion creatrice. Cependant, il reste toujpurs de I'espace pour d'autres passions qui ne sepuisent pas dans celle-la. Le syntagme... et autres passions comporte quelque chose d'indefini qui correspond a la nature de chacun des arts, done a ceiui du theatre egalement.
