The Beach is a very analytical, post-dramatic or post/neo-avant-garde production, based in part on the premises of historical avant-gardes: self-reflection, provocative communication with the audience, thematisation of the real-fictional relationship, doing away with the traditional dramatic structure, abolition of stable characters etc. However, its avant-garde character is not anachronistic. This is not art for the sake of art and it is not stuck in a formalistic self-sufficiency.
