Jerzy Kawalerowicz is one of the greatest Polish and world directors. His sophisticated film idiom, clear and profound thought as well as the visual beauty of his frames enchant and please even the most demanding spectators. His and other films produced by Kadr (he was its manager and ideologue) have always drawn the attention of the world and in Poland where they were often banned. His companions in the struggle against dogmatism and for the freedom of expression and freedom in general were Andrzej Wajda, Andrzej Munk, Juliusz Machulski, Walerian Borowczyk and others. Kavalerovicz's wife Lucyna Winnicka often acted in his films. In Mother Joan of the Angels she played the title role.
