x CURATORS’ WORD
Production Suite N°2 can remind, by its title and concept of the “performative” within developed, of the famous John Austin's essay "How to Do Things With Words”. As a part of the long-term project by the collective Encyclopedic de la parole, a group of very committed researchers collects, categorizes and archives numerous words which have really been pronounced, in different contexts. In this show by Joris Lacoste, some of these speeches are musically orchestrated in a very original way, becoming thus formidable performative statements - words that “do the thing”. These words have not been transformed into classic drama structures - dialogues and monologues - but used as a starting point for extracting all of their endless potentials with only audio form - emotional, political, humorous... Conducted by a quintet of outstanding performers, this becomes an exceptionally smart, sophisticated and exciting theatre which returns to the seminal strength of this art form - the strength of the spoken word.
x ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
L’Encyclopedie de la parole is an artistic project exploring the spoken word in all its forms. Since 2007, this group of musicians, poets, directors, visual artists, actors, sociolinguists, and curators have been collecting all sorts of recordings of words and then indexing them on its website according to their particular properties or phenomena such as cadence, chorality, emphasis, saturation or melody. From this collection, L’Encyclopedie de la parole produces sound pieces, performance and shows, lectures, games and exhibitions. In 2013, Encyclopedia de la parole initiated a cycle of four “Choral Suites” based on one principle: the live reproduction of documents from Encyclopedia de la parole’s audio collection. Suite N 0.2 is, obviously, one of its four parts.
