U novel!
x CURATORS’ WORD
Marked by genre as “lyrical prose in drama technique”, Croatian Rhapsody by Miroslav Krleza takes place in a crowded wagon of a “third class of Hungarian state railway” train during the First World War. The performance On the Grave of Ignorant Europe speaks of another moment, of another kind of journey, but of an equally big challenge: the Croatian journey toward the European Union, where it is to come upon, among other things, cruel conditions of neoliberal labour market, but also myriads of misfortunate refugees from Asia and Africa. This arrogant Europe, seen by one of the leading Slovenian directors Sebastian Horvat, is blind for these images of suffering and injustice. Under the painting dominated by a motive of Europe on a white bull, arrogant Croatia and Europe are organizing a luxurious, raging, perverse and macabre salon celebration: unaware of anything, they actually perform a grotesque dirge to - themselves.
In his novella Croatian Rhapsody, Krleza gives an overview of the Croatian society, i.e. “the third class” during the First World War. He writes about the poor, the ill, about the people who managed to maintain last traces of humanity, but also about the ones who lost the last grain of hope; in a brutally realistic manner but nonetheless lovingly, he depicts the callous and cruel world of the lowest class, at the time when one world is nearing its end and a new hopeful future begins to emerge. What makes our time different from the one described by Krleza is not only the fact that faith in common future is almost completely gone from our collective imagination, but also the creation of a different social structure and a new centralization of power. Ever since the Fall of the Berlin Wall, we have witnessed the disappearance of borders and the reduction of the power of the state in comparison to capital, but also the erection of new borders (walls, wires,.,) and the metastasis of governmental surveillance. We are witnessing Europe becoming a fortress, which was not an overnight process but it obviously was invisible to many until the beginning of the “siege” which is still in progress. On the Grave of Ignorant Europe is a project conceived and created by the Slovenian director Sebastijan Horvat. inspired by Miroslav Krleza’s novella Croatian Rhapsody. Documenting the cruel reality of the First World War, and anticipating the revolution which was to obliterate the existing social differences additionally deepened by war. Krleza created a theatre scream which evades typical drama conventions.
