CURATORS’ WORD

Theatre N 099 is set to be one of the major discoveries for 52 nd Bitef audience, especially given the fact that this is the first time we have a theatre troupe from Estonia at our festival. And yet, they have already achieved international acclaim, especially after receiving the prestigious award “Premio Europa: Theatrical Realities” in 2017, and after its directors, Ene-Liis Semper and Tiit Ojasoo have worked in other countries, especially in Germany, The performance N 043: Filth is a form of physical theatre, rather than contemporary dance, with an emphasized visual aspect. Ten wonderfully expressive actors perform in a series of various situations, mostly non-verbal, ranging from everyday to scenes that develop Christian allegories. What they have in common is a comic and absurd element, resembling lonesco’s theatre, but also in the fact that they create a “global metaphor” of the disintegration of the contemporary world - one wallowing in the mud. And yet, the very fact that actors literally wallow in mud, and that the situations keep changing and developing in new, unexpected, and absurd directions, prevents us from reducing this performance to that shallow metaphor: its powerful performative-visual effect outweighs any clear meaning... Somewhat older Bitef audiences will most certainly be nostalgic about these performances, which have led to a general belief that the Belgrade fes-
