kind. It is the want of this charity that has raifed fo many jealoufies, heart burnings, mutual provocations to wrath, and thoughts of revenge among chriftians of almoft all denominations ; and has caufed them to lay the weight and ftrefs of religion upon notions, opinions, outward modes and forms, and not upon the truth and fubftance, which is Jefus Chrift, and his Spirit ; that always fpeaks the fame language, and gives us in charge to love one another. For this reafon the righteous God feems at this time to be giving up the whole frame of nature to confufion and deftruétion, and to be drowning the face of the earth in blood.
How clear is it from fcripture, that the faith which worketh by love, is that only which is acceptable to God. The apoitle Paul Eph. iy. clearly thows, that the bond of peace, and our union with God in Chrift, depend not in knowledge or in agr:ement of opinions, (much lefs in outward forms of worfhip) but in an unity in that divine
